SOCIAL MEDIA IS NOT A FAD

September 23, 2009 by Jennifer Leave a Comment

social media logoIf you haven’t already jumped on the social media speeding train, do not wait another moment.  This is not a fad that is going to die out anytime soon.  I just recently saw an article stating Facebook as the 4th largest website in the world- in the shortest amount of time.

Having worked directly with corporate organizations that are far removed from the use of social media or even the internet in general as a sales tool, I know what most businesses think immediately when faced with the idea:  “It doesn’t fit our framework” or “I am afraid it will distract our employees who will then become less productive” In response I say, “you could only be so lucky.”  Try getting 10 or so old school sales reps to just dip their feet into the social media pool is like …well, trying to teach an old dog new tricks.  Furthermore if you can honestly tell me that the 200 million people on Facebook aren’t your customers, then I would say, “you’re in the wrong business.”

The truth, as hard as it may be for businesses to swallow, is that customers, (the ones that buy your products or services) are involved in social media and they much prefer to do research and make their purchases online.  The reality is if you don’t get involved in social media immediately it may cost you a whole lot more than you would lose by at least trying it.  Guessing that your next question is probably going to be “how?”, I have come prepared to offer some advice.

Don’t try to do it alone by researching and finding your way in the dark.  That will most likely be a lesson in futility and cost you more blood sweat and tears than you can stand at the moment.  Hire a professional who will lead the way, instruct your team and run with your brand in all the right directions.  Hiring a managed service provider that can manage your campaign is a wise move and money well spent.  Think of them like a temp or part time employee because they will need to integrate with your company to be effective.  Consequently this happens to be a managed service providers strength within their market; their ability to integrate and manage your business over a long period of time.

Success in social media will not happen overnight and will not happen any sooner by simply thinking about it.   Getting  a team of individuals involved in something new can be very trying and time consuming and my guess is you have plenty of other business related activities to keep you busy, like running it.  Seek out a managed service provider, and find one you like personally because they’re moving in.

You said you wanted to be successful didn’t you?

FACEBOOK LAUNCHES A NEW MARKETING TOOL

July 13, 2009 by admin Leave a Comment

Facebook IconFacebook has launched their best widget ever. Finally facebook has come out with something to support the company pages that allows you to place a box on your website. This box contains streaming content and a button that will allow people to become fans of your Facebook page right from your website.  Check out my side bar where I have placed it.   The best part of it is that the box installs easily without any hassle’s, even on a blog.  All I did was found the template page for the side posts and placed the very short code on that page.  First time it worked perfectly which seems rare when installing new code on a blog.  The widget also allows you to install it with or without streaming content or with or without the fan list.  The box does tend to be a bit large so unchecking one of the two features from the company page where you originate the code will help to make the box a bit smaller.

This is a great new feature both for Facebook and for the Company pages because it allows companies to create a following and initiate interest in their Facebook page even when the user is not logged in or actually on Facebook at that moment.  This will undoubtedely arouse even more interest to join facebook and to get them involved in the company pages that were until now sort of a deserted island on Facebook.  It is nice to see Facebook offering some support for these very valuable and free means of company advertising.  It seems until recently not many even knew about this area of opportunity on there. To get the code: Go to your company page.  Directly underneath the profile picture or logo are several options. Click on “add a fan box” and facebook will automatically generate the code that you install onto your website or blog.  Installation on your site will vary depending on where you want it.  But all you have to do is paste the code on the page you want.  It is as simple as that.  Alter the code to change the box size or change the amount of fans it shows.  If you want the box smaller and you have a lot of fans, then changing the number of fans to show will help to make the box smaller as well.  Happy fan collecting!

BUILDING AN SEO FRIENDLY WEBSITE

July 12, 2009 by Jennifer Leave a Comment

ist1_4300292-abstract-illustration-with-globe SEO starts from the very beginning of a website’s conception.  Although SEO can later be implemented, at times it can be difficult, requiring so much reconstruction one would virtually need to rebuild an entire new website to make it SEO friendly.  With that in mind, having an SEO specialist working with the programmer and web designer to make sure all of the necessary SEO components are built into the design and the text is optimal.  Although due to cost this approach isn’t always possible, it ensures an SEO driven site with the necessary SEO components built in.

The general design of the site can be a critical feature on the readability of your site by the major search engines. Though sites programmed with flash animation tend to be eye catching they originally were unable to be indexed by Google.  So they were eye catching if you could actually find them.  A recent article put out by Google states of an improvement in their search engines ability to read flash animation but not something I would even risk if your goal is to be found in the search results.  Despite the good idea to leave flash animation out of the body of the site having your header with such programming adds a similar appeal yet remains SEO friendly. This is just one of the many things to keep in mind while building an optimized site.

Another factor of SEO that can be incorporated into web design is the ALT image Tag feature.  Here the web designer would enter a keyword within the programming of each graphic that appears on the page.  This lends additional opportunity for keyword instances that attract search engines for user search.  Because this is not easily done by an SEO Consultant after the site has been completed and most often requires the assistance of a web designer it helps to instill these features during the initial construction.

Keyworded urls are also an important feature for SEO.  Sometimes this offers an excellent opportunity to drop keywords/phrases in for added optimization assuming your domain name has the keyword in it and if it doesn’t this feature is especially important.  Let’s look at an example of a keyworded URL and how we can maximize keyword usage.  Remember any link that has our keyword in it is worth twice its weight a keyword.  So let’s say the keyword is “Button Jewelry”  the domain name is www.uniquebuttonjewelry.com/  and one of the pages on her site found by clicking on the navigation button that says “browse our shop” has a url that looks like this www.uniquebuttonjewelry.com/buybuttonjewelry.html   The keyword “button jewelry” has now appeared twice within the url  and although by itself may not lend much weight in terms of optimization, when used in conjunction with the many other urls for your website this can have a strong affect on a sites performance in the search results.

While there are many more SEO tactics that one can incorporate into the initial design of their website these are some of the basics and ones that will lend assistance with a site’s performance in the search results.  Remember to talk with your web designer about building these features and more into your website.  This could save you a lot of work later.  http://www.contentwriterseo.com

TWITTER GOES KER-PLURK!

April 28, 2009 by Jennifer 1 Comment

I don’t know about you but it seems like everytime I have something really great to post and I attempt to simply log in to Twitter I encounter problems.  Yes I am sure they are temporary, as we all know how fast Twitter is growing.  But I have found another similar site that seems to work great and interfaces with Twitter.  Plurk is a similar platform and operates much the same as Twitter.  It’s greatest feature is the how it automates the linking of facebook and twitter.  No plugins to download that sometimes work and sometimes don’t work.  So just plurk away and see your plurk posts on facebook and Twitter.  I love the world of automation.  It’s almost too easy.  Now what am I going to do with all this extra time?

ROBOFORM – HE'S A KEEPER!

April 26, 2009 by Jennifer 9 Comments

Well I did it!  I finally joined the instant messaging craze that everyone claims is going to be as big as google.  The Twitter interface is really clean and easy to use.  It is pretty basic, no ads, and it’s focus is only what you clicked on, in other words there are not a thousand things all over the page making it confusing where or what you are suppossed to do next.  Pretty much a no brainer.  I must admit at first I really didn’t get it. What was so great about posting short messages to people you don’t know.  Especially since they weren’t going to too many people except a business partner whom I exchanged “follows” with and twitter the friendly bird that follows everyone.

But then it happened. I met the “twitter robot” of my dreams.  He came from nowhere and began “following me”.  I was shy at first but at the same time flattered by his gesture.  Boy was he busy.  He was posting stuff every hour like a mad man …or I guess more like a raged robot?   I guess it wasn’t me he was interested in after all?  For a moment I was deflated, but clicked on one of his postings anyway just to see if I could get some small clues, anything that would provide insight into who he was and what he wanted with me.

That was the day I was introduced to what I would like to call the best tool ever to have been born on the web.  Yes I know that is quite a huge introduction as I may in the future take this “tool” for granted because of how easy and hassle free it has made my life.  Not to mention the fact that it came from the robot stalker on Twitter I was still reeling over.  There I was face to face, well network to network, with a similiar subhuman by name, maybe a cousin of my late twitter fling, ROBOFORM www.roboform.com  I can’t imagine my life without him now.  Yes I know there have been several poor attempts in the past of software that remembers your password but someone has finally figured it out.  It is so easy all you have to do is remember your passwords one last time and after that it takes over. It even adds links on the tool bar of the sites requiring login so the next time you want to visit you simply click the link appropriately labeled and it will not only take you there, it will log you in.  All with one (1) let me repeat ONE simple click.  I’m in love!  I have found the robot of my dreams.

Some of the more skeptical types may wonder about the security of such a process….don’t worry they got that covered too!  Check it out!  www.roboform.com  Make sure to download the free version…because I simply don’t know what else they could do to make it any better than it already is.  Must I also mention this robot did not spam me to death. He is clean, light and quiet; making himself available only when I need him…ahhh!  He treats me like a queen!

5 QUESTIONS FOR SEO PROFESSIONALS

March 15, 2009 by Jennifer Leave a Comment

I just recently have joined the online community of blogging and would like to start out by gathering responses from other professionals in the SEO world to five questions I have selected that I think are relevant topics of interest to anyone looking to create an online presence.  They are as follows:

1. What steps would you take to optimize a new website.  Let’s say your initial goal is to get ranked for the keyword(s) within the top five of googles search results?

2.  How many keywords do you think a website should have and why? How many should each page have?

3.  What type of SEO technique is most important for ranking: linkbuilding or onsite content/keyword saturation?

4.  If the customers main goal is to drive traffic to their website quickly what steps/methods would you take to do this?

5.  Briefly describe the role social media marketing plays in SEO and the steps you take to implement a campaign.
